Fat shaming is simply not going to work as an effective obesity treatment. According to Health Lab, body shaming boosts the risk of suicide and contributes to the development of depression in those who are overweight or obese. Plus, merely prescribing diet and exercise is also not enough when it comes to getting people down to a healthier weight.

Researchers have uncovered a variety of factors that can contribute to weight gain, and that make it harder to lose weight when it’s necessary to do so. For these reasons, fat shaming is ineffective.

1. Childhood Obesity and Poverty 

Did you know that there is a connection between obesity and poverty? It’s true. Experts have discovered that if an area has a higher rate of poverty, there will also be a higher obesity rate, particularly among kids. Therefore, giving people greater access to the resources that they need, and to the healthy foods that their bodies require, will be a wiser solution than just fat shaming.

2. The Link Between a Lack of Sleep and Obesity 

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body, even right down to your hormones, can move into a state of imbalance. This may lead to unwise decisions regarding diet and exercise, as cravings during the day make it hard to stay on track. And, this can have a big effect on teens, as well as older kids, so it isn’t just adults who need to worry about catching enough z’s every night. When you don’t get enough sleep on a consistent basis, your risk of weight gain increases. So, again, diet and exercise alone won’t be enough until sleep patterns are improved.

3. Most People Gain the Weight Back 

What a lot of people don’t realize is that the vast majority of individuals who lose a significant amount of weight will likely gain that weight back eventually. Basically, there are several reasons behind this, but one of those reasons is that the body changes with weight gain. More specifically, the body starts to think that weighing more is normal, so it tries to get back into that state because it thinks that that’s what it needs to do.

As you can see, there are many factors that can contribute to excess weight, and diet and exercise often fall short when those are the only two things that people are told to do. Also, fat shaming won’t get people to lose any more weight because it, too, doesn’t target the real sources of the weight problem.
